Die VUT Indie Days-Panelist_innen: Andreas Gutjahr (Our Label records/Knowtheirname)

Damit Ihr mehr über die Panelist_innen der VUT Indie Days, die im Rahmen der Berlin Music Week vom 3. bis 5. September 2014 im Postbahnhof in Berlin stattfinden, erfahrt, haben wir sie gebeten, uns ein paar Fragen zu beantworten.

Andreas Gutjahr, der neben dem Label Our Label records auch Knowtheirname betreibt, wird am Panel „Label 3.0“ am Donnerstag, den 04. September 2014 von 12 bis 13 Uhr teilnehmen.

Wir freuen uns, dass auch er uns ein paar Fragen rund um die Themen Independents und Musik beantwortet hat.

 

This year Berlin Music Week focuses on the topics of Music Released.
What do you associate with this title?

Record sales might decline, but music is still being released, even more so than ever before. Only the who and how are constantly changing. People can't live without music, artist cannot live without releasing their art into the world. And that is a good thing.

Where do you see the independent sector in five years from now?

The independent sector has the great opportunity of returning to its roots. Music produced and released by people who care about the art. The money side will continue to be extremely tough for independent labels. However, as indies have the best talent of spotting real musicians and honestly supporting them, there is great value in their work. Not only ideologically but for example for consumer brands which are looking to support talented newcomers.

What is the advantage/key to success of independent companies in your opinion?

Indies which still run their business with their hearts will always have a huge advantage over those labels only counting the Euros. This finger on the pulse of real music will always be their strength. Respect the music! Everything else can be copied.

What are the current challenges for independent companies?
And how can they meet those challenges?

The challenge for indies is to refrain from the temptation to copy the major labels. 360 degree models or renting out services to artist only with a view to revenue won't save them. They need to trust their instinct and use their creative and independent power to come up with new, authentic ways to work with artists. These true partnerships will be their key to success. Audiences love musicians and indies are best poised to amplify this relationship for the success of both the artist and indie.

Vinyl, tape deck and stuff: Which medium evokes a happy association – or even the happiest one? Would you share it with us?

Personally, I think vinyl will remain a powerful niche product, but I would say that, given the Our Label strategy. Also, I am very curious about new high quality audio formats like Pono. MP3s were created because of a need for small file sizes. This need is mostly gone and digital music can in fact deliver unprecedented sound experiences. I can't wait to hear more of it. Still, nothing beats the real experience of music. Live performances will remain key.

There is so much great music out there – what is your way of discovering new tunes?

A very good question, because there is just soooooo much out there. For Our Label Records we obviously receive tons of mostly unsuitable (sorry!) music. I don't have one system or channel. Sometimes I follow the suggestion of friends on Facebook, sometimes friendly labels which I follow release excellent new stuff and every now and then I tune into Byte.FM, Passport Approved, Band of the Day and other discovery channels.

If you have been to Berlin before: Which was your favorite spot in the city? Which food did you like most – even more than Currywurst?

Ah, just after the wall came down I lived here for two years. The Quasimodo jazz club was an almost weekly destination. Teufelssee in summer, Knaack Club and back then of course Boogaloo and Delicious Doughnuts. Ah and I will always fondly remember the bus, that was partly dug into the ground and fighter jet in the backyard of Tacheles. Nowadays I seem to end up in Kreuzberg every time I visit. Oh and Bikini is a promising idea.
Food? Has to be a classic Döner! With garlic sauce, of course!
