Session: Control vs Transparency - The Controversy between Copyright Owners and Users

A controversial discussion about the current situation of licensing. Copyright owners are controlling every single step of the licensing procedures. That makes a quick and unbureaucratic legal usage of music for third parties almost impossible.

We would like to discuss various options to change this procedure provided that copyright owners get fair payments and transparency.

Ronny Krieger, Independent Consultant, GER

In the past almost 25 years Ronny Krieger has been successfully involved in pretty much all areas of the international music business. Originally a banker at the corporate lending department, he soon followed his passion for music as an artist, dj and producer, later pr agent for press and radio, label- and artist management (Modeselektor, Moderat, Booka Shade, Monkeytown Records, kanzleramt, 50 Weapons, Blaufield Music ...), worked in distribution (EFA medien), at a record store, lead a download shop (VP & CPO of Beatport), has been and still is a member of the boards of vut (the German independent music association) and Musicboard Berlin, keeps teaching Digital Media, Social Media Marketing, International Music Business at the e.b.a.m. academy and Popakademie Baden-Württemberg, has been working as an advisor for companies like FatDrop, DJBroadcast, Shutterstock and others and currently works in business development and as a strategic consultant for Native Instruments (Director of Content) and Digitally Imported. Ronny Krieger is living in Berlin, married, father of 2 kids, enjoying a healthy life style and is a dedicated CrossFitter and multiple times Tough Mudder obstacle race finisher.

Cliff joined Lewis Silkin LLP as a partner in april 2006 after over a decade as in-house counsel in the music and broadcast industry. Cliff is now part of the team spearheading our Media & Entertainment sector for the firm and he now acts for some of the world’s largest names in mobile, brands, recorded music, mobile, live music, radio, audio-visual production and online. He also specialises in working with clients whom are embracing content-based entertainment for the first time such as FMCG and lifestyle brand owners, advertising agencies, digital agencies, investment funds and financial institutions. He has a passion for working on innovative new business models, advertiser-funded programming and in the monetisation of format rights.

The Media & Entertainment Group is ranked in the “Legal 500” and “Chambers” and Cliff is ranked as a ‘leading individual’ in both directories.

He is also the founder and a director of "Eleven", a business advisory company working with disruptive business models in the world of Digital Media, Film and Sport.

Maren Monika Brombeiss, Founder and Senior Manager, Ki Artist Management, GER

Established a new artist management company focusing on artists in the electronic music genre - current roster includes Sasha, James Zabiela, Agoria, Henry Saiz and Stephan Hinz. Ki also provides label management services for clients, such as for example Sasha’s Last Night On Earth imprint.

Elén Leoni Meißner, Freelance Media Content Management & Editorial, GER

Elén Leoni Meißner ist Freelancerin im Bereich Media Content Management und Editorial und arbeitet für zahlreiche Medienunternehmen u.a. für Viacom International Media Networks.

Im Rahmen eines gemeinsamen Forschungsprojekts der Berlin Music Commission und der Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, beschäftigte sie sich mit den ökonomischen und strukturellen Auswirkungen der Digitalisierung auf den deutschen Musikmarkt und erarbeitet gemeinsam mit Experten der Musikbranche Handlungsempfehlungen für die Zukunft des Musiksektors. In diesem Zusammenhang setzte sie sich insbesondere mit dem Potential neuer Technologien für die Musikbranche auseinander und analysierte die Chancen und Herausforderungen der Blockchain-Technologie für die Musikindustrie.
