VR. AR. AI. 4K. 3D. 4DSOUND. Dolby Atmos. Tomorrow’s technology means tomorrow’s audio will be more engaging than ever before. Immersive audio experiences will allow sounds and songs to literally surround us, and high-resolution audio formats will make those sounds clearer than ever. For artists, creators, the consumer and audience, this presents an entirely new power of audio.

Photo: John Connell

John Connell is creative director of 4DSOUND, a technology platform and artistic collective exploring spatial sound as a medium. He and his partners work with artists, technologists and researchers to explore the role of listening and spatial sound technologies and their influence on our experience- with the intent to develop spaces more conducive to healthy interactions and inspiring environments.

They have curated a series of large-scale showcases exploring the relationship between listening, spatial sound and immersive technologies, including TodaysArt, TEDxDanubia, GLOBALE ZKM and their own artist residency series at the Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest, which they established in 2015.

He is also a composer working with spatial sound. NOQTURNL, his collaboration with art director Florence To and 4DSOUND founder Paul Oomen, is an overnight meditation in which 70 participants drift between waking and dreaming in a subtly shifting spatial field of sound and light. The project works with hypnagogic state, a rich mental territory for creative association and processing of memories and emotions.

John hosts workshops using sound and meditation to explore aspects of conscious awareness. The recent ‘Silence / Signal / Noise’, first hosted at Goldsmiths University London’s Future Not Found conference, examines the impact of noise in our physical and digital spaces.
