This year Berlin Music Week focuses on the topics of MUSIC RELEASED. What do you associate with this title?

New, unreleased music.

Where do you see the independent sector in five years from now?

Worldwide at eye level with the major sector

What is the advantage/key to success of independent companies in your opinion?

Creativity, 80% of new releases stem from independent companies, close relationship with artists and fans; first movers.

What are the current challenges for independent companies? And how can they meet those challenges?

National and international market access. Awareness and Piracy: Independents do not have the resources to fight piracy and only a
handful of them can afford bigger marketing campaigns.

99% of their releases can be obtained from platforms which do neither pay independent companies nor their artists; act united, stay independent; international legal framework allowing also SME to enforce their rights.

Vinyl, tape deck and stuff: Which medium evokes a happy association – or even the happiest one? Would you share it with us?

Vinyl, vinyl and vinyl. Sorry, but I’m in my 40s, grew up with that stuff and never got rid of it.

There is so much great music out there – what is your way of discovering new tunes?

Friends, colleagues, concerts, Spotify, the guy who runs the record store, emusic, festivals, TV, taxidrivers, some radio stations I listen to in taxis, books, newpapers, magazines, pictures, photographs, HBO series …

If you have been to Berlin before: Which was your favorite spot in the city? Which food did you like most – even more than Currywurst?

The spot with the traffic sign “Hamburg 279 km”. The original Currywurst made in Hamburg.
